The senior hurlers carried on the promising form they displayed against St Endas in their previous match when accounting for McDermotts in a fiery contest at Boucher Road on Sunday. We were definitely fired up for this game and quickly took control with Stephen McGivern striking over three points, one from play, a free and a 65. Sean Smith then struck a fine point from the right touchline before McDermotts registered their first point of the game. We had a few goal opportunities which we failed to convert but were eventually rewarded when Paul Carson struck to the back of the net from close range. McDermotts replied with two points but further scores from Stephen McGivern 0-2, Sean Smith 0-1 and Michael Rowntree 0-1 gave us a stranglehold on the game. Gary Dunlop then got himself on the score sheet when he struck over three quick fire points and with McDermotts getting another point the half time score saw us lead 1-11 to 0-5.
The second half scoring was led by Stephen McGivern as he helped himself to 0-7 to leave himself with a credible tally of 0-12, while Peter Carleton 0-2, Canice Mooney 0-1 and Martin Mooney 0-1 gave us our highest score of the current league campaign. McDermotts only managed a single point leaving the final score 1-22 to 0-6.
This was a promising performance, Jim Davis was very astute in goals and accurate with his puck outs, young Thomas Toland put in a good hours work, Miceal O’Brien was as solid as ever, Martin Mooney and Paul McGivern worked hard in the middle, while Stephen McGivern’s score taking was a treat to watch. This was a great team effort and everyone deserves credit for the way they put themselves on the line, it was a tough hard hitting game and no one was found wanting.
