The senior footballers had a convincing win over Rasharkin at Colaiste Feriste. While we ran out winners by seven points it could have been so much more if we had converted even half the chances we created in the opening 15 minutes – in fact the game could have been over as a contest at that stage.
Both sides traded early points with Aaron Slane pointing a 45. Michael Rowntree then took control of the ball in the half back line, kicked it to Decky Smith who passed off to Ryan Park who in turn fed Michael who had continued his run forward and he duly kicked it between the post for an excellent point. Daniel Largey then pointed before converting a penalty to give us a lead of 1-3 to 0-1. Rasharkin replied with a point before Decky Smith recorded two points, the second following a fast break up field from defense involving Sean O’Neill, Aaron Slane, Michael Rowntree, and Daniel Largey and when the ball arrived with Decky he duly obliged. A Rasharkin pointed free left us five in front but we finished the half strongly with another Daniel Largey point and Stephen Toner kicking his first point to leave the score 1-7 to 0.-3.
Anthony Rowntree opened the scoring in the second half as he powered through the Rasharkin defense and finished with a shot on his weak side which sailed over the bar. Second half substitute, Padraig McParland kicked his first point of the game and we were then awarded a second penalty. This time Daniel Largey stepped up but blasted the ball over the bar. Decky Smith got his third point of the game, before a late Rasharkin rally saw them kick two points from frees and followed by a goal to reduce the arrears. The final point of the game came from Padraig McParland to see us run out the winners 1-12 to 1-5.
We have to be pleased with this performance. We played at a high tempo, we created many scoring opportunities and defensively we are starting to take shape, with good performances right across the full back and half back lines. Next up is O’Donnells on 27 May 2018.
