The senior footballers opened their 2020 league campaign with a 4 point away defeat to Tir Na Nog at Whitehill. The first half was a low scoring affair with both teams enjoying plenty of possession but struggling to produce the end product. Tir na Nog lead 0-2 to 0-0 but points from Ceavy Slane, a free following a foul on Anthony Rowntree and a Padraig McParland point from the right side of the goal levelled the game. Both teams created goal opportunities and on both occasions the respective keepers came to their teams’ rescue. We edged in front when Gerard Slane and Sean O’Neill combined down the left wing and Sean neatly finished between the posts to put us in front for the first time. However, Tir Na Nog levelled and in the dying minutes of the half were awarded a free for an over carry which was dispatched between the posts to give them the lead at the break 0-4 to 0-3.
We started well in the second half with Padraig McParland side stepping his man and kicking a brilliant point of his left boot. Daniel Largey was then fouled in the square and the referee duly awarded the penalty. Daniel coolly stepped up and slotted the ball past the keeper to give us a three point lead. However, from this point Tir Na Nog enjoyed their best spell of the match, seven unanswered points put us firmly on the back foot as they turned a three point deficit into a four point advantage 0-11 to 1-4. A Stephen Tully pointed 45 stopped their run of scores; both teams traded further points with Niall Hughes effort from long range and when Stephen Tully pointed a free the margin was down to two. However, Tir Na Nog responded with two points and when a high ball into the square was fisted over the bar by Sean O’Neill a goal separated the teams. As stoppage time ticked down we pushed forward looking for a goal, but were caught on the break and another Tir Na Nog point gave them the assurance score and saw them victors 0-15 to 1-8.
