Our final league game before the customary divisional split saw us come away pointless and a position in the bottom half of the league.
It was the Randalstown men who had the first scoring opportunity when bursting through and rifling a shot goal ward, only for Aaron Slane to bring off a stupendous save and deny them a first minute goal. He then stepped up to convert two frees to give us the lead, the second a great effort from close to the left side line, before a Tir na nOg point got them off the mark. David Nugent then finished a free flowing move involving Ryan Park, Padraig McParland and Niall Hughes as he popped the ball between the sticks, and another Padraig McParland point gave us a goal cushion. A Tir na nOg pointed free was then cancelled out with Padraig McParland’s third point of the half but four unanswered points saw Tir na nOg take the lead for the first time in the game 0-6 to 0-5. Another Aaron Slane pointed free levelled the game but two points in quick succession gave the Whitehill outfit the edge, however a David Nugent fisted point reduced their lead and we trailed by one at the break 0-8 to 0-7.
The second half start was a replica of the first as the Tir na nOg player burst through the defence, struck a fierce shot goal bound and again Aaron Slane stood firm and made another outstanding save to keep us in the game. Tir na nOg opened the scoring with a point but we hit a purple patch and points from Padraig McParland (0-2), Aaron Slane and a fine finish from Sean Lindberg gave us a deserved two point lead. The Randalstown’s men came storming back as they picked off the points to get back into the game. Aaron Slane kept us in the game with another excellent save and when Padraig McParland kicked his fifth point the sides were level with everything to play for. Tir na Nog edged a point in front but we suffered a major setback when a converted penalty gave them a handy lead. We battled hard and pressed forward but they finished much the stronger adding three points to their tally to win 1-16 to 0-12. Click here for photos of the game.
