ACHL Div 3 – Mac Dáibhéid 1-16 Cuchulainn 0-21

The senior hurlers opened their league campaign with a two-point home defeat to Cuchulainns (Ard Mhacha).

Both teams got off the mark courteous of points from frees with Marcas Toner on target from around 50 metres. Chris Gallagher then added an excellent point following a good spell of possession hurling but the Armagh men opened up a lead as they struck three-points (0-2f). We reacted well with Chris Gallagher converting a long range free and Canice Mooney scoring after a good lay-off from Anthony Rowntree to level the game. Chris Gallagher was on the mark again with a long-range point from inside his own half and a Canice Mooney close in free reversed the two-point advantage.

Cuchulainns once again brought the game level with two pointed frees before Marcas Toner launched the sliotar high into the Cuchulainn’s goalmouth, the flight deceived their goalkeeper and it ended up in the back of the net. Cuchulainns reduced the deficit to one with two points (0-1f) before Cormac Maguire struck a nice point, of his left side, and Marcas Toner added another following good work from Jamie McNally. Cuchulainns finished the half strongly with Sean Smith pulling off an outstanding save as he dived low to his left to turn away the sliotar but three consecutive points saw the sides go in level at the break 1-8 to 0-11.

Colm McKee opened the second half scoring with a well-taken point but Cuchulainns then enjoyed their best spell of the game as they hit a purple patch adding six unanswered points. We steadied the ship with points from Canice Mooney (0-1f), Jamie McNally who drove through a group of players to convert and Don Whelan (0-1f) who scored with his first touch after coming on as a sub. Again, Cuchulainns responded with three-points to open a five-point gap and again we responded with points from Chris Gallagher (0-2) and Don Whelan. Another Cuchulainn point left a goal between the sides and despite pushing for the elusive goal a Marcas Toner point concluded the scoring with Cuchulainns the victors 1-16 to 0-21.
