UHL Div 5A - Woodford Gaels v Davitts
|
Woodford Gaels 1-4 Davitts 1-9
Saturday night saw us make the long trip to Ballyconnell in County Cavan to play Woodford Gaels in our first ever venture in the Ulster Hurling League. The weather was not ideal with a strong breeze blowing and heavy underfoot pitch conditions.
Despite this an entertaining game was to follow and provided us with a much needed workout for our first match of the competitive season. We played into the breeze in the first half and started brightly when Ciaran Wright picked off an excellent point within the first minute to give us the lead. However, Woodford Gaels then made use of the breeze to open their account with a long range point before a long high ball into the box caused confusion in our defence and somehow the ball ended up in the net. This spurred the Gaels on and they added another point to lead 1-2 to 0-1. At this stage we started to settle down. Defensively we started to get on top and close down the space, the midfield began to get motoring and the forwards movement improved giving us more opportunities. We hit back with a Sean Smith point before we were awarded a 45 metre free. Paul Morgan stepped up to take the free and what everyone thought would be a simple point, but with the Woodford Gaels defense slow to get organised he fired a shot to the back of the net to level the scores at 1-2 to 1-2.
We quickly took command in the second half and with points from Ciaran Wright, Gary Dunlop, Martin Mooney and Sean Smith 0-2 pushed us into a 1-7 to 1-2 lead and after this the result was never in doubt. Although Woodford Gaels valiantly hung in with two further point two long range frees from Ciaran Wright killed of their challenge to give a final scoreline of 1-9 to 1-4 and give us a winning start to our campaign.
This was a good all round team effort with the backline working very hard to restrict Woodford Gaels particulary when they had the advantage of the strong breeze. The midfield provided good backup and linked well with the forward line and once the forwards started to make space we created many scoring chances. Although we shot numerous wides at least this gives us something to work on for our next outing on Saturday week against Clonduff. Let's hope everyone gets along to give the team support.

Latharna Og no match for Senior Hurlers
|
This was by far our best performance of the season with no fewer than nine people getting on the scoresheet. Playing with the breeze in the first half we scored at will amassing a credible 3-12 to Larnes 1-1. It was an excellent all round performance with everyone playing their part. What was most pleasing was the effort and commitment from the players and the sharpness in the score taking area was superlative - scores form all angles and distances.
In the second half we were put under more pressure as Larne tried to get back in the game but the defense held strong and depsite Larne's spirited effort it was to prove fruitless as we cancelled out any scores to maintain our commanding lead.
The final scoreline of 5-14 to 2-8 could have been more but we must be more than satisfied with this performance. Man of the match was Sean Smith, who totally dominated the midfield area and was always at the centre of attacks. He was able assisted by Rory McAvoy and Peter Carleton (sen) who also worked tirelessly.
Scorers:Terry Fallon 0-2, Sean Smith 0-2, Tommy Toland 2-2, Canice Mooney 0-3, Sean Prenter 0-3, Rory McAvoy 0-1, Paul McCorry 2-0, Peter Carleton Og 1-0, Mark McKeagney 0-1

ACHL Div 3 Davitts 2-14 O'Mitchel's Og 1-4
|
Following our heavy defeat to Cloughmills last week, we got our act together again with a win over O'Mitchel's Og at Twinbrook. We were always in control and three points apiece for S Prenter and C Wright, a minor from Martin Mooney and a C Maguire goal had us in in the lead at half time despite O'Mitchel's Og reponse of a goal and a point.
Our back line were very solid and sterling work by M Rowntree and E Gallagher in defense snuffed out any real threat that O'Mitchel's Og posed in the second half. We mirrored our first half scoring tally shooting 1-7 to their three points for a comprehensive victory. Second half scorers were C Wright 0-3, S Smith 1-1, S Prenter 0-1, M Mooney 0-1 and P Carleton Og 0-1. |

ACHL Div 3 Davitts 4-9 Bredagh 3-4
|
We recorded our second win of the season with an excellent win over Bredagh at Cherryvale. On a pitch that was in great order for ground hurling we were quickly into our stroke. A long range free from S Prenter followed by a skillfully taken P McGivern goal put us 1-1 to no score in front. Breadgh tried to close the game down with some tight marking and got their first score of the half with a well worked move. However, this was to be their only score of the first half as P Carleton Og hit his first goal of the game, followed by points from P McGivern (0-2), S Prenter, T Fennell and a kicked effort from M Mooney put us in a commanding position at half time 2-6 to 0-1.
Bredagh started the second half strongly and hit two goals and a point without reply to close the gap to five points. However, we steadied the ship and added three points from R McEvoy, S Smith and S Prenter to extend the lead. Bredagh responded with another point before P Carleton Og hit his second goal of the game to put us 3-9 to 2-3 in front. Bredagh then pressurised in a bid to close the gap and a further goal and a point left five between us. We killed the game off when P Carleton Og got his hat trick when blasting to the net for the final score of the game.
T Toland, D O'Neill, J Davis, E Gallagher, S Smith (0-1), M O'Brien, M Rowntree, M Mooney (0-1), S Prenter (0-3), R McEvoy (0-1), T Fennell (0-1), C McNally, P Carleton Og (3-0), C Wright, P Mc Givern (1-2) Subs : P Carleton Mor, A Maguire, B Keating, P Carson |
