The senior footballers lost their opening group game of the 2021 Intermediate Football Championship away to Con Magee’s on Wednesday evening.
The first half was very competitive as both teams traded point for point to leave the game tied at 0-4 apiece with our scores coming from Anto McGrattan who cut in from the left side and slotted his kick between the posts, CJ Sullivan who raced at his man, dropped the shoulder and split the posts, Stephen Tully from a free and Anthony Rowntree who powered past his man to kick a nice score. Con Magee’s then enjoyed a good spell in the game as they kicked four unanswered points with the pick of their scores coming from a long range effort and another following a nice catch and mark. We responded well and were rewarded with two long range points from frees by Stephen Tully to half the deficit and leave us trailing by 2 at the break 0-8 to 0-6.
We started brightly on the resumption; Anthony Rowntree won possession from the throw-in and raced forward; was fouled and Stephen Tully dispatched the resulting free between the posts. We then had an opportunity to level the game but the chance went begging. However, from this point on Conn Mag Uidh dominated the game and went on a scoring spree, kicking 1-6 to put the game to bed. The game petered out as we finished with the final two points from Stephen Tully and CJ Sullivan. Final score Con Magee’s 1-14 Mac Dáibhéid 0-9.
Scorers: Stephen Tully 0-5, CJ Sullivan 0-2, Anthony Rowntree 0-1
