The senior footballers took the spoils in this their second group match of the Intermediate Football Championship, at home to Ciceam Ard Eoin yesterday. In a keenly contested match, we came out on the right side of the result winning by the minimum margin.
Scores were hard to come by early on with both defences on top and at the first water break both sides had only registered two points apiece. Ciceam Ard Eoin’s scores came from frees while Chris Gallagher was on the mark for us after a good spell of possession football and CJ Sullivan levelled after taking on several defenders and firing over the bar. We continued to enjoy plenty of possession and started to reap the dividends as Aaron Slane kicked two quality points from frees and Michael Connolly weighed in with a nice effort from the left side. However, our lead was short lived as Ciceam Ard Eoin bounced back with three points (two frees) to level the game. Conor Toner then restored our lead as he charged up field played a one two, took the return pass and split the posts. As the game went into first half injury time Ciceam Ard Eoin equalised with another pointed free to leave it all square at the break 0-6 to 0-6.
Ciceam Ard Eoin went a point in front on the restart but Caoimhin Slane responded with a long range effort to again bring the sides level. Another Ciceam Ard Eoin point edged them in front but a Danny Wallace rasping shot found the back of the Ciceam Ard Eoin net to give us the advantage. We followed up with further points from frees from Aaron and Gerard Slane and it appeared this had been the decisive move that would give us the win. As the clocked ticked down Ciceam Ard Eoin staged a final effort, and with three quick fire points, the deficit was down to one. In the dying seconds, they had one final opportunity to get something from the game but the shot came back of the upright and we had done enough to hold on for the win 1-9 to 0-11.
Scorers: Chris Gallagher 0-1, CJ Sullivan 0-1, Aaron Slane 0-3, Michael Connolly 0-1, Conor Toner 0-1, Caoimhin Slane 0-1, Danny Wallace 1-0, Gerard Slane 0-1
