The senior hurlers lost their second round encounter to a very good Naomh Pól team at Shaws Road on Sunday past. Naomh Pól were well worth their win but in defeat we have to take away some encouragement as we showed a much better attitude, fight and determination than we did in the previous round against Latharna Óg.
Naomh Pól took the early advantage leading 0-5 to 0-1 with several well taken points from play and frees but we kept on their coat tails with points from Don Whelan reducing the deficit to a single point. We were then rocked from our stride when Naomh Pól netted to extend their advantage and from here on we were faced with a mountain to climb. Further exchanges of points ensued before Naomh Pól secured a further goal and at the break held the lead 2-10 to 0-8.
Naomh Pól opened the second half scoring with two points to move further ahead but we persisted to run at their defence and were rewarded with a penalty which was duly dispatched to the net by Don Whelan, only seven between the sides. However, any hope of getting back into the game were dashed with another Naomh Pól goal and despite our best efforts they ran out deserved winners 3-20 to 1-12.
Special mention must go to Don Whelan who amassed 1-11 of our total which included two outstanding scores from inside our own half with our other score coming from Colm McKee.
