The senior hurlers got back to winning ways with a hard fought victory over a good Sarsfields side at the bear pit. An early Stephen McGivern point from a free, following a foul on Geordie O’Kane, got us off the mark and he quickly followed up with another when racing through the middle and dissecting the posts. A diagonal cross field ball was picked up by Michael Rowntree and he increased our lead to three but Sarsfields got themselves back into the game with two well taken points. Rory McElroy then went on a solo run, drew the defender and hand passed the sliotar to Geordie O’Kane and despite the attention of the Sarsfield’s defenders and the tight angle he duly struck the sliotar over the bar. Both teams then traded a brace of points; Sarsfield’s converted a free, Colm McKee struck an excellent point from out on the right side- line, Sarsfields responded again before Michael Rowntree took a high catch in his own half, dispatched the sliotar with almighty force and it soared over the bar. Stephen McGivern increased our lead with a pointed free before finishing a free flowing move involving Chris Gallagher, Colm McKee and Michael Rowntree to stretch our lead. Sarsfields then pointed from long range but Stephen McGivern got his fifth point of the half to give us a lead at the break 0-9 to 0-5.
Scores in the second half were hard to come by but we increased our advantage when Rory McEvoy scored a nice point, he went on a run up the left wing, laid the sliotar off to Gearoid Cosgrove, took the return and struck it high over the bar. Stephen McGivern then went on a run from deep inside his own half and used his strength to bypass the Sarsfield’s defenders before adding another point. Sarsfields pointed before a long range Colm McKee effort struck the upright and dropped to the waiting Chris Mulligan who thrashed the sliotar to the net. Sarsfields quickly responded with a major but a Rory McElroy point saw us take the victory 1-12 to 1-6.
