Davitts U12s lose out by single point
Davitts under 12 footballers continued their league campaign on Friday past with the narrowest of defeats at the hands of a very useful Gortnamona side at Enright Park. It was harsh on the young Clonard outfit who had led for the majority of the game and probably should have then pulled it back in the final minutes.

Gortnamona started brightly but after squandering a few early chances found themselves behind to a goal from poacher supreme Niall Hughes. Dan Wilson had fired in a great shot which the Gorts keeper could only parry and Davitts full forward smashed into the roof of the net. Gortnamona then pulled back 2 points before Caolán Park responded for Davitts with a great long range point. The score remained 1-1 to 2 points at the break with both teams passing up opportunities to add to their tally.

Both teams opened brightly in the second period with a Gortnamona point being answered by one from Padraig McParland. It was at this stage of the game however that the team from the Turf took control and scored two points to tie things up. Davitts however regained the lead with an opportunist finish to the net from Martin Bradley following great approach play from Bap McGreevy and Padraig McParland.

Gorts then got another foothold of the game and scored 2 very fine goals and a point to take a lead for the first time in the game. It looked all over at this stage but this young Davitts side have some great battling qualities and fired back with another goal from Niall Hughes followed quickly by 2 points from Packy Quinn. Just at the death the same player was running through on goal and was upended by one of the Gortnamona defenders, only for the referee to blow for full time. It was unlucky as the resultant free would have most likely tied what had been a very close game between 2 well matched sides.

Davitts had really good performances from Conor Moreland in goals, Shea McGrandle and Brendan Collins in defence, Padraig McParland and Dan Wilson battled well in midfield whilst Bap McGreevy was the pick of the forwards along with Niall Hughes and Martin Bradley.

Next week sees the big match of the season so far with Davitts taking on St John's at Corrigan Park in the quarter fnal of the Championship.

Davitt's U12s narrowly pipped in 13 goal thriller
No, it's not a misprint - Davitts under 12's and their counterparts from St John's served up a feast of goals in a thrilling encounter last Friday at Boucher Road. All credit to both teams for a very sporting game full of endeavour and no lack of ability, and to make it all the more praiseworthy, it was a game played in very difficult conditions due to the gusting wind.

Indeed, it was these conditions that played a major part in the outcome as St Johns came from behind in the second half to snatch the game by two points at the end. Against the breeze, the Whiterock outfit started off very well and scored a goal and a point before Davitts started to assert themselves on the game. They probably should have scored more with the wind advantage but had to settle for 3 goals and 2 points in the first half, the scores coming from Niall Hughes who grabbed a brace of goals and Martin Bradley netting the other. Daniel Wilson added 2 great points and St Johns notched a few more scores to leave it 3-2 to 1-4 at the break.

Davitts were all set for an onslaught after the interval but the young lads from Dunville started like a house on fire and Martin Bradley scored the goal of the game before Niall Hughes completed his hat trick. At this stage there was 10 points in it for the Davitts side and it looked like a victory was on the cards. However, St Johns sides are never beaten and once they hit back with two quick goals, you got a sense that this game was far from over.

The wind certainly picked up at this stage and the young Davitts lads found it hard to get the ball out of defense, however, when they did manage to move the ball up the park, the forward line always looked like scoring. As it turned out, Davitts actually scored 4-1 against the wind but alas, they came up just short as St Johns rattled up an impressive 5-4 of their own during this period.

So, a first defeat of the season for this promising Davitts team, but the signs are good and it certainly wets the appetite for the rematch of the two teams in the Championship in a few weeks time.

Best for Davitts on the night were Padraig McParland and Brendan Collins who both played a half each outfield and in goal, Shando, Shea McRandle, Caolán Park, Martin Bradley and Niall Hughes, who is emerging as a great target man at full forward. Well done lads and keep up the effort.

Davitts young guns get off to winning start
The under 12 footballers of Michael Davitts opened up their league campaign with a comfortable victory over a very young but resillient St Galls side at Milltown on Friday evening. The game was played in difficult conditions following a heavy downpour just before throw in and both teams encountered early handling difficulties.

However, once the midfield duo of Daniel Wilson and Martin Bradley started to exert their influence on the game, the scores started to come and a few early points were followed by a goal blitz midway through the first half. Niall Hughes at full forward was particularly enjoying his encounter with his opposition number and managed to bag a hat trick of goals. St Galls, to their credit, never let their heads drop and just before the break managed to record their first scores of the game with a good point followed by a well worked goal.

Davitts rang the changes at half time and seemed to take their foot off the pedal a little. However, they did manage a number of good scores, with substitute Brendan Collins helping himself to a goal and a point amongst others. St Galls added a few late scores of their own to give the finishing scoreline a more respectable look and the young Galls goalkeeper rounded off an excellent individual display with a great penalty save in the final minute from Davitts Martin Bradley.

So, overall, a very decent start for the young team from the Lower Falls in what promises to be an exciting season. However, they will most definitely face a tougher challenge this coming week when they take on League favourites St John's at Boucher Road.

Best for Davitts in a good team display were Shay McRandle, Ryan Sewell and Caoimhin Slane in defence, Daniel Wilson and Martin Bradley at centre field whilst Caolán Park, Aaron Slane and Niall Hughes showed up well in attack.

Davitts Under 12's up for the 'Challenge'
Davitts Under 12 Footballers continued a run of challenge games with a very entertaining and close encounter with St Galls on Friday night at Milltown. Indeed so close was the game that neither sideline was entirely certain of the outcome and when the referee belatedly confessed to having no notepad or the scoring, an admirable draw seemed the fairest way to settle affairs.

However, the most important and pleasing aspect for the Davitts mentors was the determination and effort displayed by the young team. Having said that, St Galls started the brighter and mainly due to their extra height and strength at midfield, they had plenty of efforts at goal but were unable to notch any scores. Anthony Rowntree then started to win some good balls and this inspired Daviitts to bring the game to St Galls and it didn't take long to make this count. Anthony Rowntree started the move and played a lovely ball to Caolán Park who in turn played a first time ball over the top to Niall Hughes. Niall outstripped the opposition defence to slot home a lovely goal - soccer style.

St Galls then came back and notched two great points before Aaron Slane responded with a fine effort himself. So at half time there were two points in it to Davitts. The second half had much more scores to report which is perrhaps why the confusion arose at the end. Davitts certainly dominated the early stages of the second period and extended their lead through scores from Daniel Wilson(2), Niall Hughes and a good goal from Caolán Park.

At this stage Davitts were cruising but a combination of too many substitutions, fatigue and of course a great effort by St Galls saw the lead gradually reduce and when St Galls finished the game with a well taken goal, it signalled the end of a great sporting affair between two promising young sides.

In a great overall team performance, Davitts had good individual displays from Brendan Collins in goal, Adam Donaghy, Anthony Rowntree and seetpea in defence, Padraig McParland and Daniel Wilson at midfield with Pearse McAuley and Niall Hughes being the pick of the forwards.
