ACFL Div 2 – Senior Football Update

The senior footballers latest league outings against St Pauls and Aghagallon resulted in a draw and a lose respectively. If truth be told both games were there for the taking.

The St Paul’s game saw us take the initiative and playing free flowing football we caused St Pauls all sorts of problems. Points from Liam McGivern (0-2), Aaron Slane, Anto McGrattan and Sean O’Neill saw us storm into a deserved lead while St Paul’s only response was a pointed free which left the half time score 0-5 to 0-1 in our favour.

St Paul’s reduced the deficit at the start of the 2nd with two quick fire points before Gerard Burns responded with our first point of the half. Four unanswered pointed St Paul’s frees edged them into the lead for the first time in the match. However, our response came from Sean O’ Neill as his looped shot found its way to the back of the net to give us a   2 point cushion. With the clock ticking down it appeared that we had done enough to secure the points but St Paul’s surged forward and a long range rasping shot somehow found the net. Our response had to be quick and  as we broke up field looking for the elusive score a St Paul’s defender committed a foul to give us the opportunity of an equaliser. Aaron Slane maintained his nerve and composure and duly dispatched his kick between the points to earn us a deserved draw with time up and the scores level at 1-7.

Unlike the St Pauls game we were very slow out of the blocks against  Aghagallon. Before we knew what had happened we found ourselves trailing by 5 as  Aghagallon kicked an early goal and two points. An Aaron Slane free got us on the scoreboard before both teams exchanged points with our scores coming from Sean O’ Neill (0-2) and from Aaron Slane (0-2). At this stage we had played our way back into the game and reduced the deficit to two, however as we attempted to break forward an Agahagallon interception gave them the opportunity to race goalwards and the attempt was kicked to the net to leave us trailing at the break 0-5 to 2-4.

The first score of the 2nd half went to Agahagallon from a free and this seemed to renergise the team. Points from Aaron Slane (0-2), Sean O’ Neill and Anto McGrattan cut Aghagallon’s lead to two. However, Aghagallon hit back with three points to restore their 5 point advantage. Again, we refused to roll over and hit back with points from Sean O’Neill and Chris Gallagher. Aghagallon pointed from a free to leave 4 between the sides and despite points from Padraig McParland and Stephen Toner we came up short on the night losing 0-13 to 2-9.

While we numerical kicked more scores than Aghagallon the old adage that goals win games was never more true, they took the two chances that were presented to them which made it an uphill climb for us.
