ACHL Div 4B Creggan 0-10 Davitts 1-13

dvc-002The senior hurlers made it four wins from five league games to maintain their top of the table position with a well deserved and convincing away win over Creggan. This was the biggest game of the season for us and we were definitely prepared both physically and mentally. From the throw in we set out our stall with points from Anton McCaffrey and Canice Mooney and from here we never looked back. We played with high intensity and moved the sliotar with quick and sharp precision making it difficult for Creggan to defend. Our hard work and endeavour against the wind saw us take a half time lead 0-6 to 0-4 (3 frees) as Peter Carleton slotted over 0-3 and Sean Prenter got his first point of the game.

We stepped it up a notch in the second half and following a pointed exchange, Canice Mooney 0-1, we delivered a killer blow with an Anton McCaffrey goal to extend the lead to 1-7 to 0-6. A pointed Creggan free reduced the gap but another Anton McCaffrey point and two Sean Prenter points maintained our comfortable lead. Another Creggan point was cancelled out by substitute Sean Smyth as he executed a well taken point. Creggan fired over two pointed frees before a two point reply from Canice Mooney and Ciaran Wright gave us a seven point advantage with time almost up. We stood firm and the final point of the game, a Creggan free saw us victorious on a six point winning margin.

Without doubt this was our best performance to date. We were solid and committed all over the pitch and Creggan found it difficult to create any space as we closed and hassled them, hooked and blocked everytime they got possession. Anytime they managed to break through defensively we were sound and with quick movement of the sliotar we turned defense into attack quickly. The majority of Creggan’s scores came from frees and while we restricted their scoring from play we need to work on our tackling to reduce the number of frees we concede in scoring positions. Our next game is in the Junior Hurling Championship against Ardoyne on the weekend of 20 June and we will continue with our preparations on Tuesday night at Boucher Road at 6.30pm.
