This was one that definitely got away from our senior footballers. We created many good scoring opportunities but at crucial times didn’t execute the score and in the end it came back to bite us as we went down by the minimum.
The opening five minutes were very cagey with both teams sharing good spells of possession but neither showing any ambition or penetration to work the ball into the scoring zone. The first point eventually went the way of the home side and we responded with two points from Caoimhin Slane, the first from the right side of the pitch, with the outside of his boot and the second when he finished off a fine passage of play. We then created a few crossing opportunities to extend our lead but failed to convert and the Glen Road side took advantage when the ball was palmed to the net. We hit back with points from Oskar Deevy and Aaron Slane, from just inside the arc, and Sean O’Neill game us the lead in the 20th minute after a great solo run. Naomh Treasa levelled again when the wind carried the ball in from an acute angle, while another Sean O’Neill point gave us the half time lead 1-2 to 0-6.
We scored the opening point of the second half from Gerard Slane and went further ahead when CJ Sullivan pointed. Naomh Treasa took advantage of a breaking ball following a great block by Sean O’Neill with a point but another CJ Sullivan point restored our goal advantage. The changing point came when we went on a fast break, the attack broke down when a score looked on the cards and Naomh Treasa worked the ball forward and concluded with a foul just outside the card which was duly converted to leave a point between the sides. This galvanised the home team and they kicked the next three points. We pushed hard to create an opportunity to get back into the game but a last ditch shot goal wards by Marcas Toner scratched the paint work on the bar leaving Naomh Treasa the victors 1-8 to 0-10.
