The senior footballers put in their best display of the season away to Gortnamóna in this Saturday evening fixture with a good display of attacking football.
Sean O’Neill opened the scoring with a nice right footed finish from just inside the centre of the arc before the home side levelled with a well worked point. They edged in front with a point from the right side before Caoimhin Slane tied the game with a 13 metre pointed free. Both teams then traded points with Brady Maguire on target after working the ball out of defence and showing composure to finish. Gort then hit a purple patch as they kicked five consecutive points which included three frees and a 2 point effort. We hit back with another Brady Maguire point and a nice point from Nathan Maginn who started and finished a fast sweeping attack involving Conor Maguire and Anthony Rowntree. Caoimhin Slane kicked the final score of the half and we went in trailing 0-8 to 0-6 at the break.
We were quick out of the blocks in the second half. A Sean Smyth shot was saved by the keeper and Oscar Deevy was on hand to finish to the net. Caoimhin Slane then kicked three consecutive points to extend our advantage while Sean Smyth contributed a fisted point to give us a 5 point lead. Gort responded with two points to reduce the deficit to a goal but a Sean Smyth goal-bound shot was tipped over the bar for another point to give us the insurance. Gort worked the ball down the middle for a point to again put a goal between the sides but we regained momentum with a brace of points from Sean O’Neill. Gort didn’t lie down and added a further 2 points to again leave a goal between the sides. Another Caoimhin Slane point after a fine passage of handpassing looked to have secured the points but there was still time for a bit of drama as Gort kicked a 2 point score and with time running out we were only two in front. We showed good composure at this stage and a Sean Smyth point on the final whistle sealed the issue and the win 0-15 to 1-15.
