The senior footballers picked up their first points of this year’s Intermediate Football Championship with an excellent six‑point win away to Naomh Una, thanks to a powerful second‑half performance.
The opening half was keenly contested, with both sides playing some nice football. Conall Turley opened the scoring for the home side with a point from a free while Sean O’Neill replied with a two point score to edge us into the lead. However, straight from the resultant kick out Killian McCormick capitalised on a defensive mix‑up resulting in the opening goal of the game. A point from a 45 by Aaron Slane again left the minimum between the sides but the home team responded with two consecutive points. CJ Sullivan then went on a mazy run and duly converted the point but again the Aggies pointed before two quick fire goals from Paul McLaughlin and Brady Maguire put us in the ascendency. Both teams tagged on further points with Caoimhin Slane on target and we went in at the break leading 2‑5 to 1‑6.
The second half was just as competitive. Sean Smyth opened the scoring with a nice individual point, but points from Turley and McLarnon brought the home side level. A further exchange of points from each team with Oscar Deevy off the mark, saw the sides level after 45 minutes. We then enjoyed a period of dominance during the final quarter, kicking 1-5 in a row, with Anto Hargan scoring with his first touch after being introduced as a substitute, palming the ball to the net as it came across the small square, CJ Sullivan contributed 0-4 including a long range two pointer after a great period of possession and the other point coming from the boot of Paul McLaughlin. A late goal from Declan Crummey was just too late to give the home side any chance of a possible comeback with the final point falling to CJ Sullivan to give us the win 2-10 to 3-13.
Scorers: Sean O’Neill 0-2, Aaron Slane 0-1, CJ Sullivan 0-6, Paul McLaughlin 1-1, Brady Maguire 1-0, Caoimhin Slane 0-1, Sean Smyth 0-1, Oscar Deevy 0-1, Anto Hargan 1-0
