The South Antrim Footballers completed the double over St Brigids in this league encounter at Boucher Road last Thursday night. It was a keenly contested match with early points from Gerard Burns and Joe Kearney cancelled out by two St Brigid minors.
A well taken goal by young Liam Boyce and an Aaron Jack point put us in control of the game at 1-3 to 0-2. Following a point from St Brigid’s, we broke strongly up field and when the ball was played into the box there was an infringement and the referee awarded a penalty. Liam McGivern stepped up fired his shot goal wards only to see the ball rebound of the keeper. Liam followed in and managed to direct the ball over the bar. St Brigid’s were to get the last point of the half giving us a half time lead 1-4 to 0-4.
The second half started with a Joe Kearney point before St Brigids hit a purple match scoring three unanswered points to leave the minimum margin between the teams. We responded well with points from Joe Kearney and Colm McAuley increasing the lead. Back came St Brigids with two points before Colm McAuley hit 1-1 to give us what appeared to be a winning cushion with five minutes remaining. However, St Brigids raised a final effort and hit 1-2 but a Joe Kearney point was to give us the win on a score of 2-9 to 1-11.
From a spectator point of view this was an excellent game – good hard football, good skill level and plenty of scores.
