The senior hurlers got back on the winning trail with a comprehensive win over Belfast
Shamrocks on Sunday at the Falls Park. Despite a warm sunny day, there was a strong wind blowing down the pitch and in the first half we played against it. Both teams traded early points and we raced into a 1-6 to 0-4 advantage. Our scores came from Canice Mooney 0-4, Tommy Toland 0-1, Gerard McNally 1-0 and Stephen Toner 0-1. Shamrocks hit back and finished the half strongly with three points, two from frees to leave us in front at half time 1-6 to 0-7.
The shackles came off in the second half and with some excellent team play and stick work
we scored at will. Canice Mooney was on fire, adding a further 0-7 to his tally, Rory McEvoy struck 0-2, Thomas Toland 0-1, Gearoid Cosgrove fired over a 65, young Chris Gallagher added 0-2 and Tommy Toland (senior) 0-1.
This was an excellent performance, defensively we were sound, snuffing out any threat that Shamrocks threw at us. Mark McKeagney’s long puck outs gave us the opportunity to get into scoring positions early, the
full back line off Gearoid Cosgrove, Micheal O’Brien and Brian Keating were solid, while Gerard Cairns, Paul Morgan and Christy McNally were defensively sound in the half back line. In the middle of the park both Peter Carleton and Thomas fielded some excellent high balls which enabled us to drive forward and put Shamrocks under pressure. Canice Mooney top scored on the day with 0-11 but Rory McEvoy, Chris Gallagher, Thomas Toland, Gerard McNally, Stephen Toner and Ciaran McGivern worked hard to either get on the score sheet or set up scores for their teammates.
