We hosted our fellow Gaels from St Marks, Dublin for games at U8 level in both hurling and football today at Grosvenor Recreation Centre. The good weather continued and everyone was treated to a feast of activities. The hurling games were first up with all the kids getting the opportunity to participate in two games. The skill level and determination displayed by the kids was excellent, the sound of the ash clashing and the tackling belied their young ages. The hard work put in by both sets of coaches was apparent for all to see and parents, relatives and supporters created an atmosphere which enabled the kids to perform to a high standard. Lunch followed the hurling games and the afternoon session was set up for the football games.
As with the hurling the kids again had two games to show of their skills. With the large
crowd giving the kids encouragement they were treated to the fine skills of the game. The tackling and blocking was very good as was the handling skills and hand passing. The enthusiasm and continuous running of the kids to create space, get on the ball and get a chance to take a score was apparent. Both teams had been well prepared by their coaches who must be proud of the effort that their players put in.
Following the games everyone headed back to the club rooms for a snack and the presentation of medals to all the kids. We also presented St Marks with a memento of their visit and hope that this can be the start of a relationship which can afford both clubs the opportunity to cross paths in the future as we strive to promote the development of our kids.
Finally, a thank you to everyone who turned up to support the kids and I have no doubt that everyone will agree that today’s venture was very worthwhile and a great success.
