The senior footballers opened their ACFL Division 2 league campaign away to Moneyglass on Sunday 17 April 2016. In a very entertaining game, we unfortunately came out on the wrong side of the result going down by a goal. If truth be told we had Moneyglass on the rack for long parts of the game and probably deserved more.
It was Moneyglass who got off to the better start with an early point which was followed up with a fortunate goal as a blocked pass flicked up into to the hands of a Moneyglass forward who had a straightforward run to goal and he duly blasted to the back of the net. Despite the early setback we regrouped and playing open football chipped away at the deficit. Three points from Aaron Slane and one from Padraig McParland drew the sides level. Moneyglass responded with a point before the ball broke of the upright and Liam McGivern fisted to the net to put us in front for the first time in the match. Both teams exchanged points with our point coming from Padraig McParland following a nice run from the half back line. With half time approaching Moneyglass got their second goal of the game to lead by one but an Aaron Slane point sent both teams in all square at the break 2-3 to 1-6.
The second half opened with both teams exchanging points with Liam McGivern on target before Moneyglass went on a scoring spree kicking four unanswered points to lead by four. Gerard Burns then kicked a nice point but Moneyglass extended their lead to five with a further two points. From then on we pressed in a bid to get back into the game and two Aaron Slane points saw us close the gap to a goal. With time running out we maintained the pressure on the Moneyglass defense as we looked for that elusive goal but the opportunity did not arise and Moneyglass held on for the win.
Next game is away to Dunloy on 22 April 2016 with a 7.15pm throw in.
