The senior hurlers, as with their opening game of the league campaign, were more than competitive in the first half but faded badly in the second with Gortnamóna running out handy winners at Páirc Mhic Ionnrachtaigh.
Gortnamóna opened the scoring courtesy of a free after two minutes and raced into a three-point advantage before Chris Gallagher struck with a pointed free from around the 50-metre mark central to the posts. We followed with a well worked goal when Paul Reid cut in from a tight angle near the corner, delivered a fierce shot across the edge of the small square and Anthony Rowntree doubled on it past the helpless Gort keeper to edge us a point to the good. We continued our scoring with another pointed free from Chris Gallagher and an excellent finish from Deaglan Mooney, after a long solo run from deep inside his own half and after Caoimhin Heaney struck a long range point we held a four-point advantage. However, our good work was quickly undone as we conceded two quickfire goals and a pointed free from Gortnamóna on the stroke of half time left us a goal in arrears 2-4 to 1-4.
The second half was all Gortnamóna as we failed to build any momentum or foothold in the game and Gort simply went through the motions and with a four goal blitz put the game to bed. Two Chris Gallagher points and an Anthony Rowntree minor were all we had to show for a very lack lustre second half performance and Gortnamóna took the win on a 6-11 to 1-7 score line.
Scorers: Chris Gallagher 0-4, Anthony Rowntree 1-1, Deaglan Mooney 0-1 and Caoimhin Heaney 0-1.
