The senior hurlers retained their junior B crown when beating rivals St Agnes by a solitary point last Saturday at Sarsfields pitch.
Colm McKee opened the scoring when he fired over a long range point from the left hand side of the pitch. Good work in defense by Anthony Rowntree saw him feed the ball into the corner forward position to Rory McEvoy who took control of the sliotar laid off a hand pass to the oncoming Sean McElhatton
who slotted the sliotar over the bar. Rory then got on the score sheet as he took possession, jinked round two defenders and struck the sliotar between the sticks. Our next point came from Stephen McGivern; the sliotar started with goalkeeper Christy McNally, he played the ball down the right side of the pitch to Stephen McGivern who went on a solo run before finishing off the move with a point to give us the lead 0-4 to 0-0. St Agnes got off the mark with a well executed point and followed it up with a pointed free to half the deficit. Stephen McGivern then took a pass from Michael Rowntree and he duly dispatched the sliotar over the bar. Colm McKee got his second point of the game after a great catch and pass from Gearoid Cosgrove while Chris Gallagher pointed of his right side. St Agnes
converted a 65 before a Chris Gallagher 21 yard free restored our four point advantage with the half time score 0-8 to 0-4.
St Agnes started the second half brightly scoring four unanswered points, 2 from frees to level the game. A Stephen McGivern point broke the St Agnes momentum and a Canice Mooney free gave us a two point advantage. The defining moment then came when a high ball was launched into the full forward area and Stephen McGivern soared above the defender, took the catch and crashed his shot to the back of the net.
With the clock ticking away, we held a 5 point lead and it appeared that we had done enough but an Aggies point was quickly followed by a goal and with the deficit down to a single point the match was up for grabs. With resolute defending we coped with the final Aggies push to take the trophy 1-10 to 1-9.
Well done to all involved as we now proceed to the Junior A Championship with a trip to Cushendall to face Cushendun on 6 August with a 5pm throw in.
