Extra time win in Senior Reserve Plate

Davitts 2-11 Ardoyne 2-10The second string recorded a fine victory over Ardoyne to progress to the next round of the Senior Reserve Plate. It took extra time to separate the teams in what was an excellent game of football. We raced into a early lead, taking advantage of the strong breeze to lead 1-6 to 0-2 with Anto Robinson getting the goal following an error by the Ardoyne keeper and points from Sean Prenter (0-2), Daniel Largey (0-2), Kev McParland (0-1) and Stephen Toner (0-1). However, Ardoyne hit back and reduced the deficit to two with a goal and two points. A Sean Prenter free left the half time score 1-7 to 1-4.Ardoyne started the second half with more purpose and it looked as if the three point cushion built up playing with the assistance of the breeze would not be enough to see us through. Two points followed by a bullet of a goal edged Ardoyne into the lead but a Sean Prenter free took us within a point. Ardoyne replied with another point to lead by two but a Mark McKeagney fisted goal put us a point in front with time almost up. It was fitting that Ardoyne slotted over the equalising point to send the game into extra time.Extra time was somewhat scrappy with both defenses managing to restrict the scoring opportunities. It took three Sean Prenter points from frees to cancel out Ardoyne’s two points to see us get the one point victory.Man of the match was Colm McAuley who was outstanding in defense. When Ardoyne threatened he was always in a position to get the tackle in and break up numerous attacks. His running from the half back line set up the opportunities for the forwards. He was ably assisted in defense by brother Mark and Christy McNally, while Daniel Largey in midfield and Sean Prenter in the forward line were others to stand out.
