Last gasp goal clinches victory

All County Football League Division 2This was a must win game for Davitts in order to pull themselves out of the relegation battle and they obiliged with a last gasp goal to seal a 2 point victory. Both teams made a slow start, battling against a fierce crosswind, but the game burst into life with both teams trading point for point to see the scores locked at 0-3 a piece. The Davitt scores coming from Martin Mooney 0-2 and Gary Nelson. Davitts started to put the Ballymena defence under pressure and a poor attempt to clear their lines let Gary Nelson in to slide the ball into the net. Ballymena replied with another point before Gary Nelson added the last point of the half to leave the score Davitts 1-4 Ballymena 0-4.Despite Ballymena scoring a long range point straight from the restart, three unanswered points from Joe Kearney, Sean Prenter and Colly O’Riordan gave the Davitts a five point advantage and they appeared to be heading for victory. Both teams added a further point with Sean McGovern’s 45 the best score of the night. Ballymena suddenly clicked into gear and some excellent point taking saw them close the gap to 3 points. As the game approached the final minutes Ballymena were awarded a penalty which was converted by Peter McCann to tie the scores at 1-8 apiece. They then went in front with another McCann point and defeat was on the cards for Davitts. However with time running out they played a long ball into the Ballymena box and the ball broke kindly to Darren Munster who fired it to the back of the Ballymena net. This was the final action of the game with the final score Davitts 2-8 Ballymena 1-9.This was a fine game played in testing conditions and good battle for both teams as they prepare for the upcoming championship games.
