Senior hurlers secure semi-final spot

Davitts 4-7 Castlewellan 1-8The hurlers continue to produce quality performances with another win in the Ulster hurling league, one which keeps them top of the league and should be good enough to secure top spot with a game to go. This was by far the most physical match we have had in the campaign and from the start we were under no illusions as to the task ahead. Castlewellan opened the scoring with a point which was cancelled out by Paul Morgan.

Sean Smith replied to Castlewellan’s second point before he scored two long range goals – both efforts rifling through a crowded box and past the keeper. The half was to end with a Castlewellan point leaving us 2-2 to 0-3 in front.Castlewellan came out for the second half all guns blazing. They quickly erased the deficit as they notched a goal and two points to level the match. At this stage we could have crumbled but we showed great character and hit back with four points, one each for Stephen McGivern and Anton McCaffrey and two for Paul Morgan. Castlewellan fought back with two points but a Peter Carleton goal gave us the final push and impetus to go on and win the game. Anton McCaffrey added a goal and a point in the closing stages with Castlewellan’s only response a solitary point. Best for us on the night was Stephen McGivern, Sean Smith and Chris McNally. The final group game is this Saturday against Bredagh at Cherryvale with a 6.30pm throw in.
