Beringer Cup S/F – Davitts 2-10 McDermotts 0-10

The senior footballers booked their place in the final of the Beringer Cup after a hard fought and well deserved win at Shaws Road over McDermotts. The opening quarter of an hour was nip and tuck as both teams traded points, Gerard Burns kicked our first point, with Liam McGivern, Collie O’Riordan and Ciaran O’Riordan adding to our tally. With the scores tied at 0-4 apiece Sean McGovern kicked two dead ball points, one from a 45 and the second, a free from around 50 metres to give us the advantage. Liam McGivern got his second point of the game to leave a goal between the sides but another McDermotts point left us in front at half time 0-7 to 0-5.

We started the second half on the front foot and were rewarded when Ryan Rooney bent a fierce shot to the roof of the McDermotts net. Another McDermotts point was quickly followed by our second goal, this time Collie O’Riordan finishing to the net and we had opened up a 7 point lead. McDermotts responded with two points but Sean McGovern cancelled these with another two points. McDermotts responded with two quick points but Pearse McAuley kicked over a fine point with his left foot to leave us victors 2-10 to 0-10.  This was a much better performance than we displayed against the same opposition last week. We worked much harder, played as a unit and were determined to get the right result. When McDermotts threatened to get into the game the introduction of young Danny Wallace shored up the back line and gave us the impetus when needed.

We now play St Malachys in the final after they had an excellent win over St Galls. This will be another difficult game and one which we will need to play to our strengths if we are to have any thoughts of lifting the trophy.
