JFC Final – Davitts 1-7 Glenravel 0-6

DSC_0068All roads led to Kickhams Creggan yesterday for the Junior Football Championship final against Glenravel. Weather conditions were excellent both for players and supporters while the pitch was in perfect order.

DSC_0044We opened the scoring with a point from Tiernan McGreevy before Glenravel levelled, however Anto McGrattan and Danny Wallace got themselves on the scoreboard to give us a two point advantage. Glenravel had prevailed in our two league encounters this season but we had done our homework and playing with a high intensity we frustrated them. We prevented them from getting space to play in ensuring that clear scoring opportunities were kept to a minimum. The final point of the half went to Glenravel and in a low scoring half we went in at the break leading 0-3 to 0-2.

Captain, Daniel Largey kicked the opening point of the second half to give us the perfect DSC_0102start, however we lost our shape for a ten minute period and Glenravel took advantage kicking three points from frees to go into the lead for the first time in the game.

A defining moment of the game came when goal keeper Aaron Slane stepped up to kick a 45, the ball went high into the square and as players went for it the ball rebounded from the inner stanchion of the goals and back out, the umpire quickly awarded the goal and we had restored our two point lead. A Christopher Gallagher free increased our lead before another pointed Glenravel free left a goal between the sides.

DSC_0131As time ticked away Glenravel threw everything at us but we remained resolute, and no matter what came we dealt with it giving them no chance of getting in for that elusive goal. The game was put to bed in the dying seconds when Niall Hughes got the ball at the end of a well engineered move down the right wing and he cut inside before kicking the ensurance point. The final whistle blew and we had deservedly taken the junior title on a score of 1-7 to 0-6.

DSC_0143Great credit should go to manager Michael Brady who got the tatics spot on, players knew exactly what he expected them to do and in doing so ensured that we gave a performance worthy of champions. Check out photos of the game by clicking here.
