ACFL Div 2 – Naomh Eargnait 1-23 Mac Dáibhéid 2-7

The senior footballers were on the road on Wednesday evening to face joint league leaders Naomh Eargnait in their latest league game. Unfortunately, it was the home side who came out on top, with what on paper looks like a convincing margin of victory but overall, at certain stages of the game, we were more than competitive and the final score did not reflect the effort put in by the team.

Naomh Eargnait had a fast start with their first shot heading for goal with keeper Ryan McAuley turning it over the bar for the opening point. An indiscretion and the moving off the ball 50 metres gave the home side a two pointer from the free and the full array off scores was completed when they hit the net after a fast flowing break from a tap and go. A converted 13 metre free left us trailing by 7 before Conor Toner finally got us our first point of the evening. He went on a solo run from deep in defence, laid off the pass, took the return and kicked a nice effort from the right side of the pitch.

However, another monstrous 2 point effort sailed over the bar to extend the home advantage to 9. Caoimhe Slane then played a pass into Anthony Rowntree who fed the ball to Niall McParland who duly obliged as he blasted to the net to give us some glimmer of hope. CJ Sullivan added another point to our tally, from just inside the arc, but our brief period of momentum was broken as Naomh Eargnait responded with 5 consecutive points. The final point of the half came from CJ Sullivan which left us trailing 1-11 to 1-4.

The second half followed a similar pattern and we did our best to stay in the game. However, Naomh Eargnait with the luxury of a lead were able to see the game through to deservedly, take the spoils, adding 12 points to our 1-3 (Caoimhe Slane 0-3 and Anthony Rowntree 1-0) for a final score win 1-23 to 2-7.
