ACFL Div 2 – Sarsfields 1-11 Davitts 2-12

The Senior footballers fought back from an eight point deficit to secure a deserving four point win over Sarsfields at Shaw’s Road on Sunday.

Sarsfields playing with the aid of the wind in the first half started brightly opening up a two point advantage. However a Gerard Rowntree point and a Sean McGovern forty five brought the sides level. At this stage we started to take control of the game but despite having the greater possession we struggled against the breeze to turn this into scores. Another Sarsfields point was cancelled out by a Darren O’Neill point from forty yards and after we missed two golden goal chances Sarsfields slotted over four unanswered points, three from frees, to leave us behind 0-7 to 0-3 at the break.

We got off to a terrible start in the second half as Sarsfields hit us with a goal and a point to extend their lead to eight. At this stage we could have dropped the heads but we stuck in and progressively worked our way back into the game. Sean O’Neill kicked two points, one an excellent fifty yard free but Sarsfields cancelled these with a two point retort. The introduction of substitute, Daniel Largey changed the course of the game.  A Sean McGovern point was quickly followed by a Daniel Largey blasted effort to the back of the Sarsfield’s net and it was everything to play for. Another Sean O’Neill point was cancelled by a Sarsfield free before points from Daniel Largey and Stevie Dobbin reduced the gap to two. A Sean McGovern kicked effort from sixty yards out on the right hand sidelined bounced once in the Sarsfields square and over the bar to reduce the deficit to one. The killer score came from Collie O’Riordan as he took a pass, side stepped round the Sarsfields defender and finished to the net to put us in front by two. We rounded off  the victory with two further points from Sean O’Neill and Anto McGrattan.
