The senior footballers got their first win of the season when accounting for Sarsfields, in this keenly contested Division 3 encounter at Boucher Road.
Both teams opened brightly with Sarsfields finding the back of the net in the opening minutes only for Ryan Rooney to level with a good goal finish. Ryan then added a further point before a Sean McGovern 35 metre free extended our advantage. A Sarsfield’s pointed free reduced the deficit but a fast move up field saw Liam McGivern take possession and he duly hit the back of the net. Sarsfields responded with two points to leave us in front at half- time 2-2 to 1-3.
Sarsfields  picked off the first point of the second half but this was cancelled out with another pointed Sean McGovern free and when Sarsfields kicked three unanswered points to take the lead we looked in trouble. However, we picked up the tempo and a Gerard Burn’s point was then followed by Liam McGivern’s second goal. This time he powered his way through the Sarsfields defense and hit an unstoppable shot to the back of the net. Sarsfields replied with a pointed free but a Sean McGovern 45 split the posts and gave us a three point advantage going into the last five minutes. Sarsfields pressed and reduced the deficit to one but the last point of the game came from Collie O’Riordan to give us a two point victory. For photos of the game click here.
This was a hard earned victory against a good side. We showed that we can play direct football and today picked off three nice goals. Overall we showed more determination and a will to get the result and got our just rewards.
