ACHL Div 4 – St Agnes 1-6 Davitts 1-14

The senior hurlers accounted for St Agnes today at Woodlands in this ACHL Division 4 encounter. Despite the wet conditions the pitch was in excellent condition for hurling and in the first ten minutes we could have and maybe should have finished off two good goal opportunities but it was St Agnes who took an early lead with two well taken pointed frees.

This stirred us into action as we reeled off five unanswered points with both Martin Mooney and Stephen McGivern firing over and Canice Mooney splitting the posts with three well executed frees. St Agnes reduced the lead with two points before the point of the match from Sean Prenter. With his back to goal and 60 yards out, he jab lifted the sliotar and in the same movement struck an exquisite shot over the bar. This reignited our charge and Canice Mooney added a further two points before Rory McEvoy blasted to the net on the stroke of half time to leave us in front 1-8 to 0-4.

St Agnes hit back at the start of the second half with a goal but points from Canice Mooney and Martin Mooney gave us a six point cushion. Our response to another St Agnes point was to hit four of our own from Sean Prenter, Rory McEvoy and Canice Mooney (0-2). The game came to a finale with St Agnes getting the last point of the game to leave us winners 1-14 to 1-6.

This was a solid performance all over the pitch. The back line was very good and it was good to see Paul McGivern and Miceal O’Brien back in their normal defensive roles, Gerard Burns had an excellent first half as he constantly created havoc in the St Agnes defense, while Martin Mooney took on a new role as full forward which gave us a new dimension to our play.
