Davitts young guns get off to winning start

The under 12 footballers of Michael Davitts opened up their league campaign with a comfortable victory over a very young but resillient St Galls side at Milltown on Friday evening. The game was played in difficult conditions following a heavy downpour just before throw in and both teams encountered early handling difficulties.However, once the midfield duo of Daniel Wilson and Martin Bradley started to exert their influence on the game, the scores started to come and a few early points were followed by a goal blitz midway through the first half. Niall Hughes at full forward was particularly enjoying his encounter with his opposition number and managed to bag a hat trick of goals. St Galls, to their credit, never let their heads drop and just before the break managed to record their first scores of the game with a good point followed by a well worked goal. Davitts rang the changes at half time and seemed to take their foot off the pedal a little. However, they did manage a number of good scores, with substitute Brendan Collins helping himself to a goal and a point amongst others. St Galls added a few late scores of their own to give the finishing scoreline a more respectable look and the young Galls goalkeeper rounded off an excellent individual display with a great penalty save in the final minute from Davitts Martin Bradley.So, overall, a very decent start for the young team from the Lower Falls in what promises to be an exciting season. However, they will most definitely face a tougher challenge this coming week when they take on League favourites St John’s at Boucher Road.Best for Davitts in a good team display were Shay McRandle, Ryan Sewell and Caoimhin Slane in defence, Daniel Wilson and Martin Bradley at centre field whilst Caol
