JFC S/F Replay – Davitts 2-15 St Agnes 1-3

The senior footballers progressed to the Junior Football Championship final with an emphatic win over St Agnes, in the semi-final replay, at Sarsfields on Saturday evening.

A strong opening 15 minutes saw us take command of the game as we worked hard to cut down the Aggies scoring opportunities, particularly goal threats. However, on the one occasion when they did get through Aaron Slane pulled off an outstanding save. Our first seven scores came from seven different players, Sean McGovern, Collie O’Riordan, Daniel Largey, Ciaran O’Riordan, Aaron Slane, Danny Wallace and Anto McGrattan. St Agnes only score of the half came from a free and when we tagged on another two points (one from Ciaran O’Riordan, the other flicked over the bar, unsure who got the touch)  and Liam McGivern blasted to the net we led 1-9 to 0-1 at the break.

We kept the momentum up in the second half and our intensity in the tackle ensured that the Aggies had limited opportunities to make a comeback. Further points from Aaron Slane, Anto McGrattan 0-2, Danny Wallace 0-1 Daniel Largey 0-1 and Ciaran O’Riordan and a goal from either Daniel Largey or Danny Wallace (there is much debate going on about who got the final touch) saw us run out victors 2-15 to 1-3.

Our opponents in the final will be St Malachys and it is being muted that it will be on 6 October. There is a lot of hard work and graft to be done between now and then in preparation for what will be a tough encounter starting on Monday night.
