Minor Football League – Davitts v St John’s

Davitts minor footballers first game in the All County winter league resulted in a loss to a better drilled and more balanced St. John’s outfit at Twinbrook. Before the game had settled down, the Johnnies had raced into a nine point lead with two goals in as many minutes and a few long range points. Stephen Toner and Lee Kennedy battled hard but with many key players missing, Davitts were always up against it. The visitors looked sharper and held a comfortable lead at half time. Whether St John’s took their foot off the pedal or the fact that Davitts played with more enthusiam and intent, the second half was a better spectacle for those who braved the cold and bitter weather. The home side played in patches and enjoyed much more possession than in the first half. Although victory was out of their reach, their endeavours were rewarded when young Gareth Toner bagged a goal midway through the half. St. John’s however, maintained the points gap with some well executed points and a couple of frees to run out handy winners. Davitts are away to St. Josephs next Sunday with another 11.30am throw-in. Players to meet @ clubrooms @ 10.15am sharp.
