Underage Hurling Update

Last Wednesday night our U6, U8 and U10 juvenile hurling teams headed to Hannahstown to play Lamh Dhearg. This was going to be a good gauge as to how far these young hurlers have progressed this year.

U6 Report

Our U6s had been undefeated all year and this was the first time we had played Lamh Dhearg at this age group.

In the first period the kids were slow to get into their rhythm probably owing to the blustery weather conditions but once the stroke started to function they applied themselves very well. We dominated the second part of the first period but our shooting could have been better. In the second half some positional changes were made and the kids took it up a level. They can be proud of themselves, they gave it their all and their striking on the run was excellent. I would like to commend the young Lamhs they didn’t hold back and fought to the end. At this age group we have a lot of kids and they are enjoying the challenges put to them both at training and matches.

U8 Report

On Wednesday 18th Sept a young emerging Davitts U8 hurling team took on Lamh Dhearg at Hannahstown on a cold, blustery evening (which didn’t make it easy for all participants). A very competitive game was played with some nice hurling skills on display by both sides. On this display it’s hard to believe that the Davitts U8 team are only playing 10 months (some not even that long). A big well done to all who played and keep up the hard work.

U10 Report

The last time the two teams met we were on the end of a heavy defeat so it was a chance to gauge the kids progress so far. From the throw in the lads were well up for the game with 5 or 6 well worked scores in the first 10 minute period without response. The second period was more evenly contested but we were able to add a few more to our account with the opponents tagging on a couple of their own. The third period carried on where the second left off with some great play but more importantly some great tackling and so was a lower scoring affair. In summary the game was a great success and the improvements in the team are clear for all to see, the skills set shown by the players defies the short time scale the kids have been playing.

Summary

As the winter approaches and the bright nights fade it may well be a while before we play our next match outdoors. These teams have had a really busy summer and at times been training and playing matches 3 times a week. This was needed as we have  a lot of kids new to the game. We have a plan and a vision for the kids and the the work will continue getting them ready for next year and if the progress continues at this rate there will be many more positive results. Many thanks to all the kids and parents involved, Davitt’s Abu.
