World Handball Championship Update

Anto McGrattan, unfortunately, exited the Masters B Singles competition, on Saturday, at the second round stage when going down to the number 4 seed Michael McGinley in a tight game. He lost the first game 21-18 and when he led 17-14 in the second it appeared that the game would go to a tie break. However, McGinley rallied and in a close finish took the second game to 18. Anto put in a gallant performance and on another day the game could have gone his way.

Stephen Brady was in action on Saturday evening when taking on Martin Cooney. The lob serve proved very effective in the first game enabling Stephen to take the game 21-12. Stephen got off to a good start in the second game and built up a good lead, but the hard hitting Cooney got on a roll and tied the game. The scores tied at 12, 15 and 18 and was there to be won by either player but it was Stephen who got his hand in and rolled off the required 3 points to take the match. He now plays Denis McCarthy on Monday morning at 9.00am.

A late Saturday night start saw Kev McParland involved in a thrilling game with Michael Clerkin. The first game went to Clerkin on a score of 21-19 and the second game was even tighter with Kev coming out on top 21-20 and force the game  to the tie break. As with the previous two games neither player was prepared to give any ground as they both battled to stamp their authority on the game. In a tense and thrilling game it was Kev who prevailed 11-9 to advance to the next round. His opponent will be Finbarr Fullen on Sunday night.
