The minor team progressed to the quarter finals of the Michael Dwyer Cup on Tuesday night after a 4-10 to 1-08 win over St Agnes. Playing against the wind in the first half, Davitts made the perfect start with D Brady getting on the end of a high ball to punch the ball into the net for the first score of the game. For the next 10 minutes we took control and managed to score another 5 points with A Carlin grabbing a goal and points each from T Shaw and P McAuley. After that St Agnes raised their game and put us under pressure but our defence lead by N Maginn and T Toland held firm until the last five minutes of the half when St Agnes managed to find the net and kick some great long range points to narrow the deficit to 2 points. Right on the stroke of half time we put another high ball into the aggies square and R Park rose above the full back to find the net. Half time we were leading 3-02 to 1-06.Â
From the throw in of the second half we began to take control again with some free flowing football. This resulted in 3 unanswered points from J Close, A Carlin and R Park before A Carlin kicked his second major of the game. St Agnes showed a lot of character again and in a spell of 10 minutes threw everything at us but E Gallagher marshalled his defence well and we kept them to 2 points. After that we were able to run the clock down and even managed to add another few scores with T Kelly and A Rowntree kicking long range efforts. Final score 4-10 to 1-08.Â
Scorers on the night were D Brady 1-0, A Carlin 2-01, R Park 1-01, T Shaw 0-01, P McAuley 0-02, J Close 0-01, T Kelly 0-03 and A Rowntree. Special mention also has to go to B McGovern and the defence who never stopped working all night.
We now play O’Donnell’s in the quarter finals on Friday 24th June at Boucher Road with a 7.30 throw in.
