ACFL Div 2 – Mac Dáibhéid 0-16 Gortnamóna 3-12

A good opening 10 minutes for the visitors paved the platform on which to build and ultimately set them on the road to victory.

With 3 minutes on the clock Gortnamóna worked the ball through the lines, culminating with a nice inside pass and finish to the net. A minute later they struck their second with a low shot below the keeper into the corner and when they tagged on a point, held a substantial 7 point lead. CJ Sullivan opened our account with a nice shot from the left side of the pitch which split the points.

Gort replied with a pointed free after the referee moved the ball 50 metres following an indiscretion. A brace of points from Aaron Slane (45) and a nice finish from Gerard Slane reduced the deficit but Gort responded with a point from out on the right. Caoimhe Slane then took possession from a quick free, turned his man and popped his shot over the bar. Gort then worked a goal opportunity but chose the safer option and put the ball over the bar. The half finished with both teams trading points with Deaglan Mooney on target leaving the score 0-5 to 2-6 for the visitors.

Straight from the throw-in Gort extended their advantage with a point before an Aaron Slane 2 point effort started a bit of a comeback. Nathan Maginn kicked a fine left footed point and two pointed frees from Aaron Slane, one a 2 pointer, we had reduced the Gort lead to the minimum. Both teams then exchanged scores from frees, each converting two 2 pointers in succession, pushing Gorts lead out to a goal. They kicked another pointed free before their third goal of the day, after a high ball into the square was cleanly caught and dispatched to the net. Another Aaron Slane 2 point free just about kept us in touching distance but with time running down the game petered out with both teams adding a further point each with Anto McGrattan on the mark. At the whistle Gort had taken the win on a score of 0-16 to 3-12.
