ACFL Div 3 – Davitts 2-7 Tir na nOg 0-13

The senior footballers fought out an enthralling draw against table toppers  Tir Na Nog at the Falls Park yesterday. This was a great advert for Antrim football as the game was played at a high intensity from start to finish, the tackling was hard and fierce and both sides took some excellent scores and for any neutrals watching it would have been difficult to tell that this was a division 3 game.

Tir na nOg opened the scoring with a brace of points which were duly cancelled out by points from Liam McGivern and Caoileann Meehan. Padraig Mc Parland kicked us into the lead only for a Tir na nOg pointed free to level the scores. However, we were starting to take command of the game and were rewarded when Liam McGivern kicked to the net and further points from Anto McGrattan and Padraig McParland saw us lead at half time 1-5 to 0-3.

Both sides exchanged points early in the second half, with Anto McGrattan on target before Tir na nOg had their best spell of the game kicking seven unanswered points to take a two point lead. We pressed hard to get back into the game and when a Thomas Toland pile driver was somehow deflected for a 45 it looked as if it wasn’t going to be our day. However we kept going and a flicked ball came off the Tir na nOg crossbar and into the net to give us a one point lead. There has been a bit off a debate about who got the flick on the ball but Caoileann Meehan has claimed it!

Tir na nOg hit back with two points to wipe out our lead but in a final flourish a penetrating run from Ryan Park took him to the edge of the scoring zone and despite being under extreme pressure he calmly kicked the ball high and over the bar for the final score of the game.
