ACHL Div 4 – Davitts 1-10 St Galls 0-5

The senior hurlers completed their league campaign with a win over St Galls at Boucher Road last Sunday. The weather conditions played a big part in the early stages as both teams struggled to get to grips with driving rain. Early exchanges saw both teams register 0-2 with our points from Canice Mooney and Michael Tuohy. From here on we dominated the game, playing some free flowing hurling. We moved the sliotar quickly from defense and created many scoring chances. However, in the wet and blustery conditions we only manged to add two further points one each for Canice Mooney and Gerard Burns to  lead 0-4 to 0-2 at the half time break.

We picked up the tempo of the game from the restart and a Michael Tuohy goal and point gave us the breathing space we needed. In the back line we were strong and any attacks that St Galls mustered were snuffed out as we worked tirelessly to crowd them out making it difficult for them to get any clear cut scoring chances. Further points from Stephen McGivern 0-2 and Gerard Burns 0-1 stretched our advantage. St Galls replied with three unanswered points but final points from Michael Touhy and Stephen McGivern saw us secure a much deserved victory.

This was a great display of hurling in testing conditions and everyone deserves to be mentioned for the part they played. Everyone was given a job to do before the match and everyone carried out their task to a tee. However special mention goes to the following: young Thomas Toland who had an oustanding game in the half back line, Gearoid Cosgrove who played his first game in a while and showed the grit and determination to do the simple things well, Rory McEvoy who covered every blade of grass on the pitch as he proved a great link man between the defense and forwards, Stephen McGivern in the half forward line who got back to his best while Michael Touhy had his best game of the season as he top scored with 1-3.

Training for the championship now starts in earnest and everyone is required to attend training on Friday night at 6.30pm, at Boucher.
