JHC – Group 2 – Naomh Bríd 1-15 Mac Dáibhéid 3-10

The senior hurlers opened their JHC campaign with a one point away win over Naomh Bríd at Musgrave in their first match of the group stage.

CJ Sullivan opened the scoring with a well taken point, after good work involving Deaglan Mooney and Anthony Rowntree. Naomh Bríd levelled the game with a point from a free in the 8th minute but we were back in front when goalkeeper Thomas Maguire found Michael Rowntree from the puckout who fed a pinpoint pass to Marcas Toner and he split the posts. Another Marcas point stretched our lead but Naomh Bríd went on a run of scoring to take a 0-6 to 0-4 lead with Don Whelan striking our point from a converted free. We went further behind when Naomh Bríd goalled but we clawed our way back into the game with points from Don Whelan (0-3) and Peter Carleton. However, they stretched on with a brace of points from frees but on the stroke of half time Don Whelan finished to the Naomh Bríd net to leave the sides level at the break 1-8 to 1-8.

We struck the first point of the second half after 5 minutes with Don Whelan adding to his tally and when Anthony Rowntree struck the Naomh Bríd net it appeared we had broken their resistance but Naomh Bríd hit back, reducing the deficit to the minimum. We responded with a fine individual point from Cormac Maguire and when a Don Whelan shot was saved by the Naomh Bríd keeper, Anthony Rowntree followed up on the rebound to fire the sliotar to the net. Naomh Bríd resistance was still not broken and they plugged away with four points to leave the game final balanced going into the last few minutes. We stood resolute and at the final whistle had picked up the two points on a winning score 1-15 to 3-10.
