Carrickmacross 1-4 Davitts 1-6
The senior hurlers recorded another victory in the Ulster Hurling League away to Carrickmacross in a very tight game. The journey took longer than we anticipated and after we discovered we had taken the U12 rig with us we went straight onto the pitch, in Carrickmacross’s second kit and straight into action without the benefit of a warm up.
This did not hinder us in any way as we produced probably our best hurling in a long time. Defensively we were solid, defending from the full forward line out and going forward we created many scoring opportunities. In a twenty minute spell we struck a goal and three points the scores coming from Paul Morgan (0-1), Ciaran Wright (0-2) and Anton McCaffrey (1-0). An injury to M Tully and an enforced substitution knocked us out of our rhythm and Carrickmacross battled back into the game. They shot numerous wides from scoreable positions but did manage to slot over two points to leave the half time score 1-3 to 0-2 in our favour.
The second half was also to be low scoring but credit must be given to both teams as they rigidly stuck to tight marking and therefore cut down on the space for the forwards to score. Even when scoring opportunities did arrive both teams were guilty of being a wasteful in front of goal. We added three points in the second half, one each for Paul Morgan, Ciaran Wright and Anton McCaffrey while Carrickmacross struck 1-2 in reply. This left us winners on a score line of 1-6 to 1-4.
There many positives to take from this game, particularly our teamwork and work rate. Defensively we were solid and showed grit and determination to counteract the Carrickmacross onslaught in the last ten minutes of the game.
Best on the night were Michael Rowntree, Miceal O’Brien and Rory McEvoy.
