The U16 footballers held on for a one point victory over Lamh Dearg at Woodlands last night in the U16 football championship.
We had beaten the Lamh Dearg outfit handily in our two league encounters but we knew that this would count for nothing in this championship match and that this would be a difficult game to win. We started brightly with goals from Pearse McAuley and Daniel Wilson and a point from Levi Ames and at this stage were in control of the game. However the Lamh Dearg boys eventually got going and kicked five unanswered points to reduce the deficit to two. We struggled to lift our game but another Pearse McAuley goal gave us breathing space and a half time lead 3-1 to 0-5.
Lamh Dearg hit a  goal early in the second half putting us under increased pressure, however when the ball bobbled around the Lamh Dearg box and hit of a defender and into the net our half time advantage had been restored. Both teams then kicked two points with our scores from Daniel Wilson and Pearse McAuley. A Lamh Dearg point left four between the teams and when they blasted to the back of the net the margin was down to a single point. Lamh Dearg pushed for the equalising point or a possible goal to clinch the game but we remained resolute and managed to hold out for the win and a final appearance against O’Donnells at Casement Park on Thursday 1st September at 6.45pm.
