U18 Football Championship – Davitts 3-14 Moneyglass 0-3
Davitts Minor Footballers came through what looked to be a tough test against a decent Moneyglass team on Tuesday night in the All-county Championship. Played at a sun drenched Boucher Road, Moneyglass started very sharply and took the first point as well as kicking a few wides from decent positions.
Â
Davitts took a while to adjust to the pace but once they hit their first score, a pointed free from Aaron Carlin, they stepped up a gear or two and followed this with several scores in quick succession, including further points from Arnie, Donal Brady, Tony Kelly and a great long range effort from Billy McGovern. At this stage Billy and his midfield partner Anthony Rowntree were totally on top, the latter having a superb game throughout the sixty minutes.
Â
Moneyglass came back into the game but some great tackling and fielding from the back line, where Thomas Toland, Nathan Maginn and Mark Marron were particularly impressive, ensured that no scores were leaked. At the other end, the goal breakthrough came after a through ball from Thomas Shaw saw Caoileann Meehan race on to fire high into the corner for a smashing finish. Another maximum followed very quickly, when after great work by Caoileann Meehan and Tony Kelly who fisted the ball to Arnie, the full forward blasted the ball to the net. A few other points followed leaving the half-time score 2-7 to 0-1.
Â
Davitts did not get complacent in the second half and started off on the front foot with Arnie and then 2 consecutive points from wing half-back Conor Toner stretching the lead. Moneyglass did rally and scored 2 points themselves before Davitts asserted their dominance once again. Substitute Ciaran McGivern took an excellent score before Jason Close put the icing on the cake with a tremendous shot to the top corner of the goal from more than 20 yards.
Â
This was a brilliant team effort with everyone from goalkeeper to full forward playing their part. Well done lads, and it is a tough encounter with St Teresa’s that now awaits.
