Following on from a midweek defeat, away to Ruairi Ogs, on a scoreline of 2-16 to 1-9, the senior hurlers were looking to get back on track when they welcomed Gortnamóna to Páirc Mhic Dhaibhéid.
The sliotar was driven down the right side of the pitch towards Cormac Maguire who duly controlled it, stepped inside his man onto his left and split the posts for the opening score. Gortnamóna opened their account with two successive points, from frees to edge in front. Deaglan Mooney levelled the game with a long range point, following a pin point pass from Cormac Maguire but Gort went in front again with a point. However, Chris Gallagher displayed some fine stickwork to control a pass from Colm McKee resulting in the equalising score. The next two points came courtesy of Colm McKee and Caoimhin Rainey and we opened up a goal advantage when Chris Gallagher fired over a point, from a free out towards the sideline.
We enjoyed a good period of possession and created many scoring opportunities, however at times we lacked a bit of composure in front of goal and were guilty of some wasteful shooting. Both teams traded points with Oskar Deevy on target before Gortnamóna struck a nice goal to level. We responded well and Peter Carleton after taking some hard hits, broke the tackle before landing a long-range point. Deaglan Mooney then took possession of the sliotar from a sideline cut and fired over the bar and on the half time whistle Chris Gallagher struck a point from a 65 to give us a goal lead 0-10 to 1-4.
Gortnamóna came out firing on the restart with some clinical finishing, firing over 5 consecutive points before Chris Gallagher pointed from inside his own half to leave us a point in arrears. However, Gortnamóna had the bit between their teeth and after a well worked point which started with the goalkeeper, struck their second goal of the game to give them some breathing space. Chris Gallagher pointed a brace of frees to cut the deficit to a goal but Gortnamóna were in fine form with their shooting efficiency adding two points before their third goal ultimately closed out the game. The final point also went the way of the Gort men to leave them winners 0-13 to 3-13.
