The senior hurlers picked up their first points of the league campaign with a home win over Naomh Treasa, by the minimum margin, at Páirc Mac Dáibhéid on Wednesday night.
We took control from the off and a Colm McKee pass to Marcus Toner was flicked over the bar for the opening score. Further points from Stephen McGivern and another from Marcus gave us a goal advantage before Naomh Treasa opened their account from a pointed free. Marcus Toner and Stephen McGivern added points to their tallies to extend our lead and when Stephen McGivern fired a sideline ball into the square from 45 yards out on the left, it deceived everyone and ended up in the back of the net. Stephen tagged on another point from a free and at this stage Naomh Treasa were struggling to gain any momentum but they fired over their second point of the game from a long distance free to break our sequence of scores. It was short lived as we added points from Stephen McGivern, one free and a 65 and then Canice Mooney pulled on the sliotar as it bounced in front of the goal giving the keeper no chance of making a save. Naomh Treasa picked of 2 points but we finished the half with another goal, Chris Gallagher fielded a high ball in the half back line and drilled it in to Anthony Rowntree who struck to the net to leave us in front at the break 3-8 to 0-4.
An early goal at the start of the second half from Naomh Treasa gave them a glimmer of hope of mounting a comeback but we responded well with points from Stephen McGivern (0-2, 0-1f), a nice point from Canice Mooney following a great pass from a sideline cut from Don Whelan and then Don getting on the scoreboard also.
Naomh Treasa then enjoyed their best spell of the game as they applied the pressure and were rewarded as they struck 1-3 to reduce our lead, however we kept the scoreboard ticking with points from Stephen McGivern, Don Whelan and Marcus Toner. We found ourselves having to dig deep to combat the Naomh Treasa attack who upped their game and started picking off points and when they fired in their third goal they had cut our lead to 5. We responded again with points from Canice Mooney and Stephen McGivern (0-2). Naomh Treasa finished strongly with further points and a final goal to cut the lead to the minimum but we had done enough to take the spoils in a high scoring game 3-17 to 4-13.
Scorers: Stephen McGivern 1-9, Canice Mooney 1-2, Marcus Toner 0-4, Anthony Rowntree 1-0, Don Whelan 0-2
