The U14 footballers gained revenge for their defeat to St John’s in the Peile Na Nog a few weeks ago, with a well deserved win at Corrigan Park. With the aid of the breeze in the first half we had plenty of possession and many scoring chances but failed to hit the target allowing St John’s to take a half time lead 1-2 to 0-2 with our scores coming from D Wilson and B Collins.
We expected to be put under intense pressure in the second half but we stepped up our performance and it was St John’s who were on the back foot for most of the half. A St John’s point was cancelled out by a P McParland point before they hit a goal to extend their lead 2-3 to 0-3. However, we took control of the game and a C Slane goal and two P McParland points put us within touching distance. We had several chances for goals but the St Johns keeper stood tall and made some fine saves. A St John’s point left three between the sides before points from P Quinn and P McParland reduced the deficit to a single point. We played some excellent football in the last five minutes as we pushed for the winner and in a swift move from the half back line and with some intricate handpassing the ball was received by C Moreland who blasted it past the helpless St John’s keeper to give us a two point lead which we held to the final whistle. This was a great team effort and one of which everyone should be proud.
Scorers: D Wilson 0-1, B Collins 0-1, P McParland 0-3, C Slane 1-0, P Quinn 0-1, C Moreland 1-0
